The history of philosophy of education

The philosophy of education is an old discipline, one that was hegemonic for most of the history of Western thought about educational aims and methods. From the time of the ancient Greeks until the twentieth century, philosophy of education was largely an exercise in asking foundational questions about the nature of knowledge, reality, and values and trying to articulateeducational goals and methods that would be appropriate to those ontological and philosophical assumptions.

The methods of philosophy of education

Philosophy of education can be divided into two main branches, the analytic and the continental. The former branch emphasizes educational problems and issues that arise from within the philosophy of philosophy itself, such as the nature of truth and justification. The latter branch is more concerned with how education relates to social, political, and historical contexts.

There are also several sub-branches of philosophy of education, including feminist philosophy of education, Marxist philosophy of education, critical race theory in education, and queer theory in education. Each of these sub-branches approaches the field from a unique perspective, but all share a common goal: to understand the purpose and value of education in our society.
