Frequently Asked Questions

The Lights for Learning™ provides schools and organizations the opportunity to earn funds by selling energy-efficient Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs). Here are some answers to questions you may have:

  1. Why sell CFLs?

Everyone needs to buy light bulbs! Here are some reasons they should buy CFLs:

    • They last up to 10 times as long as an incandescent bulbs
    • They use up to 75% less energy while producing the same amount of lights
    • Their energy is used creating light rather than heat; they are cooler to touch, helping to keep the house cooler during the hot summer months
    • Using less energy means lower utility bills month after month
    • Less energy used means less air pollution
  2. Who is behind the fundraiser?

The Program is sponsored by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, ComEd, and Ameren Illinois Utilities and is administered by the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance.

  3. How is this program different from others?

    The Program provides:

    • Flexibility - Participate however and whenever is best for your organization.
    • No minimum purchase requirement - Pay for only for the number of bulbs sold.
    • A strong PR opportunity - Lights for Learning can create and distribute press releases to help support your sale.
    • An educational opportunity - FREE informative and interactive programs can be tailored to educate children ranging in age from Kindergarten through Grade 12. Programs endorse the standards set forth by the Illinois and Connecticut State Boards of Education.
    • A product for everyone - A variety of sizes and styles to meet the needs of all customers.
  4. How much do we earn?

You will earn 60% profit while offering competitively priced products. We also have prizes for participating students. All participants will receive the Lights for Learning ‘lighten up’ backpack. Student who sell 20 or more items will receive a Lights for Learning t-shirt as well as the backpack. Students selling 40 or more items will receive a $10.00 book store gift card in addition to the t-shirt and backpack.

  5. Is it complicated to participate?

It's easy! You will receive an order form for each participant. You also have the opportunity to have one of our Field Representatives come to your school to either host a FREE kick-off assembly or simply just address a small group of kids. We will tailor every sale to your needs. It can be a door-to-door sale or a booth at a baseball game or grocery store! At the end of the fundraiser, tabulate the total number of bulbs sold along with the remittance amount on the spread sheet provided. Then, simply mail the spread-sheet and amount due to us for processing! Help is available through the entire process.

  6. Do you have materials in Spanish?

Yes. The order form is available in a Spanish version--simply let us know.

  7. Are CFLs safe for kids to handle and sell?

Yes. Although CFLs require a small amount of mercury to operate, it's typically less than 4 milligrams--about the amount that would cover the tip of a ballpoint pen. No mercury is released when the bulbs are intact (unbroken) or in use. Learn more about recycling and disposing of CFLs.
